This kind of book is MY SHIT. It's so fucked up. Violent and nasty and psychologically crazy!! To say too much about what it's about would give it away. The twists are crazy and make you rethink everything you've read - and want to read it again. Insanely good. Oh and it's a trilogy published here as one book? Explains why it's so long. Whatever. I ripped through it.
Good grief this was a long book. Apparently the original Swedish version was a trilogy, but they turned it into one giant volume for English readers.
Recommended to me by my mum, who heard it was similar to Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. It definitely lacked the urgency of Stieg's trilogy, and the writing style did come across as a bit copy-cat, but it was still an enjoyable read. Super weird, with strange twists and an overly-gruesome subject matter.

DNF at 30% which I think is a feat for such a large book. I enjoyed the premise of the book but found the execution to be lacking. The characters were hard to relate to and the story came off as very stilted, there are frequent jumps from character to character which don't seem to drive the story forward. I also found the murderer to be very predictable and knew who it was without any story clues. Maybe I would have finished if the book had been more gripping and streamlined.
Major trigger warnings - soooo many! I’ll try and list them all
Child abuse
Incest
Suicide
Murder
Torture
Cults
Self harm
Range of Mental illnesses
Mutilation
Pedophilia
Rape
reading all the triggers is most definitely a turn off for reading this book, it deals with a lot of traumatic and sick issues and I wasn’t even sure I was going to be up to reading it through.
However, I LOVED this book, it treat all the issues with respect and as the main character is a female badass it shows how she’s deals with a mass of mind blowing crimes, including how she ignores her sexist bosses and proceeds to investigate the murders of immigrant children which leads to a whole spiderweb of other illegal activity. She’s not the only main character, and the book can get rather confusing as you don’t always know who is talking at the start of a chapter, at first I found this annoying and basically inconsiderate but the further in you get you more you understand the reasoning behind it, as another MC has what can be considering split personalities these are treated as separate people/perspectives as the main personality doesn’t know they exist. A lot of the crimes described are pure sick, but it’s not made dramatic or even entertaining, it’s just a matter of fact, and gives the detectives and others involved the urge to do whatever needs to be done. Sometimes what needs to be done is cold hard justice, other times it’s murder. One thing is for sure, if at any point you think you know what’s going on during this story, you will always be mistaken and shocked.

It's not a bad novel, but it didn't really grab me and it felt quite long after a while. The end annoyed me, to be honest, but I'm bit curious what's going to happen next. All in all I'm not sure if I will continue with the series.
A great crime thriller - I love how Sund was able to incorporate the lives of so many characters without ever taking away from the plot. The depiction of trauma and dissociative identity disorder is very captivating. I would definitely recommend this book to someone craving an intense crime read.
