I've been rereading all of Christie in order, and, interestingly, this is the first time there have been two Miss Marple books in a row. On the whole, the first one, A Caribbean Mystery, was better. This one, though is interesting, and introduces a very interesting character in Chief Inspector Davy. Miss Marple has a critical, but minor role in this one--quite the contrast to the last one and more similar to Christie's early treatment of her. The mystery is pretty clever and there is a surprise at the end, though you could probably figure it out if you are really paying attention!
Re-read May 2024: I've been watching the various versions of Miss Marple on television, and there are two versions of this novel which are SO different from each other that I had to come back and read the book to see which one was closer. The Joan Hixson version by miles. The Geraldine McEwen version takes dramatic liberties with the plot, though the murder and murderer stay true to the book. Weird.

I’ve never previously read any Agatha Christie, so I was excited to read this, but found myself disappointed that I couldn’t get into it. The beginning felt slow and clunky and I was surprised that Miss Marple is essentially a side character and features very little in the book.
Overall, it wasn’t an awful story, but it felt very “meh”, so three stars from me.

I'm surprised.. I must never have read this one before. Certainly a Christie novel!!!
