*whistles* this one was tough. It’s interesting how validating and emotionally exhausting it was. Too it off with a dash of anger and a heap of sadness, this makes for a book that made me feel a variety of emotions. Although I do feel a sense of comfort as well. I’m gonna go sit on this and stew in the information for a while.

It felt weird when I was rating this book because I felt that it was not in my place to judge the contents of it. I read this book as a way to understand the relationship between my girlfriend and her mother; and it did, and I'm glad that it did. I love how it's very accessible and a quick read, Karyl McBride always gives this very warm and calm atmosphere when she's talking about very serious topics so she makes you feel like you're heard and validated, and I think that's especially important when it comes to topics like maternal narcissism. This book overall is a fine mix of reflective and informative.

My minor complaint, however, is that it's not as inclusive as I'd like it to be. It has this very white-heteronormative-mother/daughter feel to it—which I'm not saying that it's bad—and it shows that it missed a very huge opportunity to bring in more daughters of various backgrounds so that it can add more diversity to the factors of a daughter's trauma from their relationship with their narcissistic mothers and also to how they dealt with it. I feel like it could have especially helped more daughters of colour and of different sexualities if it was just a tad bit more racially and socially diverse when it comes to the parts where it talks about romantic relationships, parenting, and other topics.

But that's just my personal opinion, and it was published in 2008 so maybe it was good for its time and place, and I do still think that it's valuable for many people out there who suffered from maternal narcissism.
