Horizon Alpha was a great read. I did not want it to end. It is a coming of age story of young man by the name of Caleb. It shows his journey into manhood and how he maneuvers through the trials and tribulations of life in an alternative world. Earth is no more and mankind must survive at any costs. No matter how far in the future this story goes it always seems as thought past will repeat itself at some point.

Throughout this novel we see the vast jungle of the this new planet. The inhabitants are of dinosaur ancestry or that what they seem to be from the descriptions. My favorite of the beasties are the wolf like creatures, they are cunning, have their own language and hunt in packs just like those of this world.

Caleb is the main character and Vogel gives him a daunting task that Caleb will struggle with the entire novel. That task is to simply survive. This new world is not human friendly and is now an age and time when a 15 year old is considered a full fledged adult. The story line is simple survive and keep the population multiplying. However, the Predators of Eden did not get that memo and will try to eat anyone dumb enough to get in their path. Great story, amazing character development and awesome action/adventure.

Sometimes you just want to read a simple, easy to read book that engrosses you. This is it. Are there better written books out there? Of course there are. Do I regret reading this one? Nope. In fact, I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

This wasn't pariticularly well written, but it was a fun read. I enjoyed the first half, the battling through the woods, the dinosaurs. The second half was the inevitable killing off of characters, which I didn't appreciate as much. Not bad. Dinos are always fun.

My review:

This book was fantastic!!! Normally, I don’t like sci-fi with dinosaurs in the book. The one book that I read that used them as antagonists went WAY overboard and killed my enthusiasm for reading any books of the same.

Well, I am happy to say that this book has righted the wrongs of the other book. From the beginning, when Caleb tells about what happened to Earth, the 2 centuries of traveling throughout space and the accident that fragmented the population of the spaceship on to the new planet (Teu Ceti) and the frightening discovery that the new settlers made, drew you right into the story.

Very vividly written, the author makes you feel the excitement/dread of Caleb going on his first mission, then the terror of the crash and the exhaustion of trekking cross-country to Eden base and losing unit members to the dinosaurs. I actually had nightmares about the descriptions of the T Rex (seriously, I did) and the other dinosaurs.

I will say that I loved the 2 (read them 2) twists in the story. One, I should have seen coming from a mile away, I am really good at guessing things like that, but I didn’t. The other one, near the end of the book, well to be honest, it made me want to cry. Very poignant.

How many stars will I give Horizon Alpha: Predators of Eden? 5

Why? It was a very well written, descriptive, nail-biting sci-fi space opera book that kept you glued to it for the entire book. And it makes you want more!!!!

Will I reread it? Yes

Will I recommend it to family and friends? Yes

Age range? Teens on up. It is a very clean book (no sex….actually nothing to that effect at all) but a ton of violence and death by dinosaur. Some of the death scenes are very descriptive.
