A beautifully written memoir about overcoming odds and preserving. Filled with anecdotes from early childhood to established adulthood, Walls paints an elaborate picture of the chaotic, adventurous, unpredictable, and difficult life her and her siblings lived under her parents roof, or lack of one. This story shows the strength of determination and sticking together.
Graphic: Fire/Fire injury and Alcoholism
Moderate: Injury/Injury detail, Racism, Pedophilia, Child abuse, and Sexual harassment
Minor: Animal cruelty

the amount of times my jaw hit the floor with some of the things the parents were saying in this book...wow! jeannette walls is an incredible memoirist and i've seen so many reviews comment on the way she writes about her childhood without judgement or inserting her feelings looking back on her life. i don't think i've ever read a memoir that feels as removed as this one did, but i think i liked it in this case?? it felt like she was just recounting her life as honestly as she could and leaving the emotion and judgement to lie with the reader.

This book was very well written. It's a true story and boy oh boy does her upbringing make you feel so blessed in your own. She had a wild childhood and really knew nothing different than what she had.
There were moments that truly baffled me and had to stop and reread it to make sure I understood it correctly. And it was told in such a way that felt real and not overdramatized which i really came to appreciate. Not to mention half of it takes place in my hometown :). So I definitely recommend this one. 10/10.
