I was provided a copy of Althea and Oliver by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I was so excited to read this book, and my good friend Jaime and I decided to read together I was EVEN MORE EXCITED. This is completely a book to share with a friend.

I have such a soft spot for stories where the characters have grown up together, but this book was so much more complex then that. The characters are so well written and you can feel the connection between them.

Oliver's illness is almost another character in this story and the reason for the shift in friendship, for the first time in over 10 years Althea has to learn to be on her own. While learning to deal with being an individual vs a pair Althea also is exploring her deepening feelings for her best friend.

I don't want to give to much away but I love how the supporting characters are also well thought out and add so much to the relationship.

I did have some issues with the romantic relationship between them, I understood where the author wanted to get them it just felt the outcome didn't actually fit with the actions and even feelings of the character. I don't want to spoil but I feel like the ending left a little to be desired. Or maybe this book just brought out so many great emotions my judgement is clouded haha! This was a smart and emotional tale about true friendship and life. I really did enjoy this story.

I would definitely read this again.

This was another book everyone seemed to love that I could not get through. I kept picking it up and putting it down and picking it up and putting it down until I eventually gave up around page 100. The characters never really did anything for me and I could not get into the story at all.

Hmmmmmmm. I have a lot of thoughts about this one. Still deciding how I feel.

A teen romance that is about a whole lot more than whether the girl gets the boy and how things working out can look much different than what they thought. A bit slow paced but also containing weird time jumps.

I. Loved. This. Raw and real and so confusing, just like growing up. Cliche review I know, but this is a beautiful story about how sometimes growing up just sucks and everything is just confusing and painful but somehow also kind of great. More YA books need to be as real as this one. Oliver was wonderful. I miss him already.

Picked this one up because I was trying to use a gift card to a local bookstore. I read the back and was intrigued so I took a chance. Beautifully written and relatable, and so incredibly poignant.

More like 2.5 stars...

This one was interesting and had some potential, but overall was just kind of meh. First, while it was set in the 1990s, it seemed the only discernible reason for doing so was so that the main characters would have a harder time communicating once Oliver left for New York. It felt like a plot device decision, and was only cemented in the story by occasionally tossing in references to things like VHS tapes or a discman.

Plus, the author also didn't quite have enough character development for me to be fully invested in Althea or Oliver...it was hard to know if Althea's behavior was normal (drinking, partying, lying to her father and taking off for New York, ect) or symptoms of issues within her relationships (her changing feelings for Oliver, her the ridiculous "hand off" parenting approach of her single father...).

Again, not a bad book and it will definitely find readers that like it, but overall a lot of little things kept it from really coming together.
