This was billed as a stand-alone short story for the Steampunk Chronicles series, but it really read more as a prologue than anything. Purely setup for book 3 (which I haven't read at the time of this review). That isn't bad in itself, but really wanted a stand-alone story.

I've always liked the character of Jack Dandy, so when the rest of the series went on sale recently, I grabbed this book as well. I found it to be a very short but interesting look into the life of Jack Dandy! I liked how he wasn't just the self-made King of the Underworld, but someone truly worth knowing. His style was impeccable, and I liked how he took up a cause, despite not seeming to care about anything or anyone in previous stories! All in all, an entertaining extra addition to the series!

Jack Dandy is hired by Lord Charles Abernathy, Viscount Breckenridge, to transport a crate across London. When he decides to open the crate after hearing strange noises, he is shocked by what he finds, but still walks away.

More a prologue to the next installment of the series than a separate story, yet the reader is given more insight into Dandy's character and motivations for becoming one of the most successful crime lords in the East End of London. 4 out of 5.

Great short story to really see Jack, and how he got the job, and the whole his mom who was fine, but then had him, and was disgraced, and became a prostitute. Loved it!

After being hired to transport a crate from the ruins of a dockside warehouse to St. Pancras station, Jack Dandy is horrified to hear noises within the crate. Opening it, he finds part girl, part automaton pleading for help. After nightmares of her, he goes back, but she is gone.

Short teaser between books, but it fills things in.
