A generous three stars, maybe even a 2 and 1/2. The first book was great, but this one was a bit of a let down for me. I think the really good parts of this were a bit rushed, and seemed to come out of nowhere. I also think the romance issues could’ve been solved had the FMC and MMC had a decent chat in chapter one.

I'm following that fuck it feeling like Kristen suggested to hopefully have a life half as amazing as the one she cooked up for Rune Winters.
  • The change of heart with most of the side characters was great to see and felt natural, even with the more extreme situations like "dumb aristo" bart being in love with a male witch.
  • The twists with Seraphine going from someone to be rescued to an ancient who has been plotting to destroy Cressida in a way that prevented civil war is so good, and the locket showing her at the same age was a subtle hint that went over my head. The little things that make sense in a big way later on is always so satisfying.
  • Rune being a sibyl and not understanding she was seeing the future until the end was a good touch, but it made me doubt her death was final. Seraphine would reviving her with the same spell they were trying to prevent Cressida from using makes a lot of sense though and I think being too sad at her death would've taken away from the hype of Seraphine undoing Cressida's chaos.
  • The thing I love most about this series is the extreme lengths both Rune and Gideon are willing to go for each other, and the moments they back off to let their person be themselves. Its a delicate balance, but it speaks to how strong each character is and how unbreakable their love is.

Predictabl story, but overall, it was entertaining and I couldn't put the book down; however, the back and forth capture-and-escape game that plays out with the main characters like 6 different times can get old quick especially when other scenes that feel very important seem rushed.

4.5/5. so fun, i adored this duology. though I will say I think these could have been expanded on a bit into a trilogy? make the ending not so rushed? but otherwise fantastic.

Oh my god I was actually obsessed with this series and I am truly devastated that it’s over. I think this is my favourite fantasy to date, so good I even managed to get past the fact that the MMC’s name was Gideon. The perfect duloagy and I literally have nothing but good things to say!!!
