While there were some parts that I couldn't stop reading, there were also spots that made me want to just put the book down and not finish it. In the end I am glad I did push through because it did end up being a great book, but unlike other Ted Dekker books I have enjoyed. I will be reading the Rise of the Mystics now that it is out, but I would recommend reading the lost book series before picking this one up.

I could only get through the first five chapters. This is a typical Dekker novel so if you love his writing, you will LOVE this book. Unfortunately, I feel that I have outgrown his writing so I could not get into the story. I hope maybe someday I can come back to this book.

Classic Dekker book, with a couple twists thrown in, but maybe not my favorite I’ve read so far. About halfway through you get slammed with some theology/Bible and it seemed forced. Maybe it was just more evident in this book than any of his others.

I really appreciated all his research & what it’s like to really be blind!

This was my first fantasy Ted Dekker book. I’ve read a lot of his thriller/suspense novels and love them!
The 49th Mystic is a tale of the girl, Rachelle, and her journey to find the light, the five seals, and figure out her place in life. She’s trapped between two worlds and strives to find answers.
The 49th Mystic is book one and its sequel, The Rise of the Mystics continues this tale.
The story is gripping and you’ll find yourself immersed in the worlds with Rachelle. The only thing I have to say is to make sure you’re reading this book with quietness surrounding you and no distractions. There is a lot of information, especially in the world, Other Earth. I found myself getting overwhelmed in sections because I was trying to keep all of the information straight to follow the story properly.
There were also sections that moved slowly, but the descriptions Dekker penned were vivid and needed to be explained to get an accurate portrayal.
Overall I enjoyed The 49th Mystic and look forward to reading the next book, The Rise of the Mystics, when I get the chance.

Wow. I closed this book at a loss for words. I started reading Ted's novels when I was 11 years old. Out of all of his books, this has to be his best work. He takes you into another world and makes it feel real.

Rachelle is a teenage girl from the town of Eden, Utah who was born blind. When the operation to correct her goes wrong, she begins to dream of another world. There she is thrown into chaos from the moment she opens her eyes, in both worlds.

The 49th Mystic revisits the land of Other Earth from his Circle Series. When I first heard of this book I knew I had to read it since they were the first books I read by him. The story is written in a way that if you've never read The Circle, you won't miss out on anything but those that have will see a few familiar faces along the way.

The story starts off quick and doesn't slow down. The first chapter had my heart racing and I don't think it ever stopped. The plot twists were well placed and caught you by surprise. The story will blow your mind at times. I finished this book wanting the next book to be in my hands so I could keep going! Before I was even halfway through the book I had already developed a deep attachment to many of the characters. But the thing I loved the most was the spiritual truths weaved into the story. I found myself having to stop and reread parts because they had such a deep impact on me. Ted has a way of explaining deep spiritual themes in the simplest of ways and The 49th Mystic is no exception. Parts of this book will stick with me for the rest of my life.

In short, if you read just one book this year, this needs to be it.
