I loved this book. It was not necessarily a happy ending or a sad ending but it was a satisfying one. It was a nice way to end the series.

Quotes:
“Announced for the umpteenth time”

“Unfortunate onion of a story”

“…the gathered islanders were in the midst of an argy-bargy, a word for “argument” that is far less cute than it sounds.”

“…letting their tears run down their faces and into the sea, which some have said is nothing but a library of all the tears in history.”

So I am finally done with this series an I am so...disappointed. That's not a bad thing! There's a reason that I gave this book 4 stars. And that's because being disappointed is kind of the while point. The mystery is never solved because the mystery is the whole point, the story never really wraps up because the lesson is that life never really wraps up in a neat and tidy bow. And yea I know that's bit I can't help but be so angry still!!! Ahhh I love this end and I hate it and I want more!!!!!!
Okay, but for reals though, this ending was so good and the story told in the book was pretty decent too, though I can't say it is my favorite of all of them, and I can say that this series will forever hold a special place in my heart.

I re-read this book in 2020 for the first time since reading it as a kid, and let me tell you: it still holds up.

The fact that the world is full of treachery and there's no way to escape it and no way to shield yourself from it is the most important message of the entire series. The only way to go on is to know that no matter how wicked the world, there is goodness, too. Sometimes it may seem the wicked have won, but as long as there is good, wickedness will never truly triumph.

(Fun fact: I found a Borders receipt dated October 24, 2006 shoved between the front cover and first page. An ancient artifact, indeed.)
