O livro torna-se mais interessante assim que é introduzida a personagem do amante de túlipas.

While it does lack the grand scope of Musketeers, Count of Monte Cristo, or even The Last Cavalier, The Black Tulip is classic Dumas: by turns sweepingly romantic and utterly ridiculous. A good pick for lovers of adventure stories that don't take months to read.

one of my fave classics.. so so happy i reread it! such an emotional story, i adore it immensely. its simplicity and complexity really stay with you.

the premise is this: holland, 1672. amidst a very intense political historical background, cornelius is a man devoted to tulips. things go wrong and he is falsely accused of betrayal of his country. he is an innocent man, so he willingly puts his head up and suffers through torture. his only hope and want: to create the unique black tulip and win the city of haarlem’s contest, for the 100.000 francs and most importantly for the honour and glory of accomplishing this grand achievement!

rosa’s determination and love, cornelius’ faith and hope, baxtel’s insane devotion/jealousy, all surrounding the black tulip

to despise flowers is to offend god.

Dumas is a master storyteller. At times this was very predictable to me as to how certain plot points were going to play out but all in all it was an very enjoyable read. Though tulips still are not in my top ten of flowers I like.
