The Black Tulip

Alexandre Dumas

3.74 AVERAGE

High drama in tulip land with intrigue! Romance! Murder! Politics! A surprisingly short book (although the notes at the beginning say a fair amount of the padding was cut to pick up the pace, and I can't say I'm too upset about it) and never has growing a flower been so important. I remember reading this as a child and being introduced to the idea of tulip-mania...

"Sometimes, one has suffered enough that he has the right never to say, 'I am too happy.'"

If Alexandre Dumas were alive today I'm pretty confident that he would be screenwriter and maybe a director. His books just have a cinematic feel to them, even though the cinema didn't yet exist. The Black Tulip is much shorter than his other major works; at only 234 pages I read it in a day. At it's heart it's a love story, one of the best I've ever read. I adored Rosa, her determination to help the wrongly imprisoned Cornelius, her desire to learn,. her ability to stand up for herself, her sense of adventure and being able to take matters in to her own hands. Dumas is surprisingly great at writing female characters.
This is a historical novel but it doesn't get bogged down in the details. Dumas just takes interesting bits from history as a place to start his story (and usually had a collaborator write those parts). This one has to do with the tulip craze in 17th century Holland. The flower market is a lot more exciting than one might think. There's a jealous rival, political intrigue, and a cruel jailer. It's so much fun!

This book was absolutely delightful. It was clever, intriguing, had a vivid landscape/setting and the characters were crafted well so you actually cared. It was a slim enough novel that all the humor had the right amount of punch and I really just was pleasantly surprised at how fun of a read it was.

3.5

I really can't express how immersed I was in this story. Yes the Romance was very insta love but there was something that gripped me to it and it's beauty.

I love the conversation of envy and how it affects u in the end.

Can't wait to read more of Dumas

I liked the story, thought the characters a little flat, but would recommend as a place to start with Dumas if his longer books intimidate at all!
