I was walking past the Waterstones and stopped dead in my tracks when I saw a beautiful window display full of special edition copies of this book. Essentially, I bought the book based solely on its cover. And I'm so glad I did, because this was a delightfully charming tale. A perfect, welcome escape.

I DID IT.
I finished my first ever book by Dumas. I have started a couple but never made it through because, let’s be real, his books are normally pretty huge. But this one is short and much less daunting and so, as I said before, I finished my first work by him and IT FEELS GREAT.

I’m currently writing up a proper review that I will have up tomorrow (I know I always say this but I’m working on my flaws, ok?)

It's been a long time since I've read Dumas (I'm well overdue for a re-read of The Count of Monte Cristo), and [b:The Black Tulip|7182|The Black Tulip|Alexandre Dumas|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1405230401l/7182._SY75_.jpg|2024166] was a fun romp through 17th Century Netherlands during the time of the "tulip fever". The first few chapters are rather dense as they lay out the political intrigue that drives the rest of the book, but ultimately this is a satisfying adventure story with the hallmarks of Dumas: romance, double-crossing, false imprisonment -- and yes, exciting horticulture action sequences.

When the city of Haarlem offers a large cash prize to the first person to successfully grow a black tulip, what's a put-upon tulip fancier to do? Why, conspire against his much more talented green-thumbed neighbor of course, and take the prize for himself. But first, he'll need to make him disappear...

The beginning of this book was a tough read for me. Still it was well written.
