IRL book club book. That Tulip Mania was as quite serious! Not like other Dumas books, this is just a story. (With a gruesome early scene)

This started off very slow. However, once John and Cornelius were introduced things picked up. I was surprised that they both were killed by the angry mob; I thought they were going to get out. That godson Cornelius was so completely oblivious to everything was a little irritating. I kept waiting for him to read the letter; it would have solved everything! Then he got arrested! At least he was pardoned. The relationship with Cornelius B. and Rosa was sweet and while her jealously was irritating it also made sense. I liked how brave she was to go to plead her case about the truth of the ownership of the black tulip. I knew from the start that "Jacob" was really Isaac and was surprised that Cornelius did not figure that out. I was pleased that William of Orange did the right thing by bringing Cornelius to the celebration, declaring Rosa the winner, and the marrying them. When he told her to dress like a Frisian bride I KNEW he was going to perform the marriage! I was surprised that Isaac keeled over and died; he deserved to go to jail. I was pleasantly surprised that Rosa's terrible father became a gardener at the end. Once the story got it's legs it was entertaining and engaging. I was pleasantly surprised because I was figuring the entire story to drag like the beginning; but it didn't.

Y'all I am an Alexandre Dumas fan girl. If I could resurrect him and make him be my writer boyfriend, I totally would (sorry boo!). Last summer I read the unabridged Count of Monte Cristo translated by Robin Buss* over a period of two weeks. I am a generally fast reader, especially when I have few work hours, however, I really wanted to savor the experience.
