Not for me. The characters feel like cardboard cut outs of a contrived enemies to lovers (but really the man is secretly obsessed with the woman) in a generic dark academia setting.

LOVE. Honestly I was kind of speeding though the whole thing because I just needed to know what happens next. Maybe because of that I missed some things, who knows. Was such a fun and thrilling read. 4.5 ⭐️

The Whispering Dark by Kelly Andrew was recommended to me as a great book with a deaf protagonist - and I always love an FMC with a disability (as one myself!) so I was keen to read this. But mysterious magic college felt more like whiny parlour tricks high school with a touch of teacher-student relationship thrown in, and it wasn't doing it for me.
I DNF'd at 19%, short enough into the book that I don't normally leave a star rating on GoodReads (although I've left one on my blog). At 19%, I already don’t like the male lead (he's an arrogant jerk and not attractive), I don’t like the teacher-student vibe of their relationship, and I’m not invested in the characters or what’s happening. Feels like a drag to this point. The magic is still pretty unclear, but not compelling enough of a mystery to save this for me.

Lots of vibes, not a lot of concrete plot. Characters felt slightly flimsy but overall I did enjoy it. The mystery was a slow unfolding rather than plot twists which I liked. The tension of Colton knowing things we don't never felt frustrating.
Also uses the word akimbo at least 3 times.

Had potential. What threw me off and was unnecessary was a hijabi character scrying and doing black magic? I’m sorry? EXCUSE ME???
You’ve got a ‘hijabi’ character there for show. If they have no ties to Islam/showing nothing about Islam then what kind of Muslim is this?? It’s not a hijabi then is it. It’s a character who wears a scarf. Simple as.

Here for the ghost vibes. Not here for Lane constantly describing herself as glass? It has tastes of some of my favorite books and it was set in Boston, so I did have a blast reading.
