Oh goodness. I really love these stories. They’re historical fictional romance. But as the series progresses and you delve into some of the other characters, it is a sprawling epic!!

The brotherhood of men in these stories just make my heart stumble. The community! The culture! The historical accuracy!!! I am in love! These stories are checking all my boxes. We always read of the brutality of slavery times. Sometimes in the hands of the right author you get the resilience and power. But Vassar is unmatched. You get it all and it’s so satisfying to read.

This story ended a bit oddly for me, but I’m still giving it high marks. I absolutely enjoyed everything else. The last 10% of this story was a cry fest! But the best kinda cry! I love these characters. Looking forward to the last three books. If something happens to any of our core characters, I will be CRUSHED! I love them all. Like family. These books are a pleasant surprise.

These men!!!

I love a good love story, and Elbert and Anna's is a good one, but the bravery, strength and brotherhood exemplified by Black and his men is wonderful to read about. The way that they work together, both to free their people and maintain and grow Fort Independence is amazing. These men are everything! Grown men who fight hard and love harder. And the way that they accepted, embraced and listened to Morgan? Wow! They could teach men today a thing or five, lol.

Well done, Ms. Vassar! Eagerly looking forward to James's story!

Elbert is THAT MAN!! I understood him so much and felt his pain. I’m glad he found his healing and peace. He needed Anna’s sweetness and softness. Anna needed his safety and protection, and without even knowing him long, she knew he was IT. The author really captures the emotions and ramifications of slavery in the male and female psyche. We are catapulted in a time machine with Joan Vassar’s writing. Can’t wait for next book!

Fav Quotes:

"What made you think me prey? What the fuck made you look at me and think you could own me... sell me? What the hell made you think a woman in my company was fair game?"

Men who have something to die for are men worth taking a stand with?

"Shame makes a man hide, and if'n a man is hidin' from peoples... just like peoples cain't see the real him, he cain't see peoples for what they is. Ya blind 'cause ya usin' all yo power hidin' rather than seein. I ain't raised no weak men folk, I's sho of that."

As a colored man, his freedom and manhood were all encompassing: he would not be reduced. His manhood was all he had to offer his woman, and he would not allow it to be fucked with. If these four men lived, there could be no life for him. There would have been no facing himself or her, it was just that simple.
