There was a lot to like about this book. It worked quite well as interesting hard ish sci-fi. The characters were likeable. But I feel like it was let down by the mystery/thriller core of the story, which seemed a bit forced at times, and the ending too pat and happy for my tastes. I think it was a major mistake to only unveil any sniff of a motive for the major antagonist at the very end, in one of those conversations between two characters that just lays out for you what just happened.

A powerful book. It’s been a long time since I’ve been hit this hard emotionally by a novel. Lucy Kissick weaves an engrossing narrative, with deep and hard hitting relationships, coupled with a creeping sense of dread and discovery in an utterly flawless way.

The way this story is unfurled, the perfect pacing, and the gradual revelation of complex truths is something to behold. Finally - to discover that this masterpiece is her first book is utterly mind blowing.

Think the darkeness, heartbreak and cruelty of Cyteen leavened with moments of Becky Chambersesque warmth, and you have the perfect cocktail. Can’t recommend highly enough!
