The gorgeous cover of EMBERS was what motivated me to want to read this story. It is definitely captivating to the eye so I had to get my hands on it. This is the first book by Karen that I have ever read and I am keeping my eyes on this author. I enjoyed EMBERS a lot, especially because it is entirely different from what angel books usually are.
The vivid description of the story makes the reader feel as if they were inside the story, watching everything happen on the sidelines. I always like to imagine the books settings and with EMBERS, it was fairly easy to do with all the great description it had. The reader travels to a whole different world, one we are not used to reading about but definitely enjoy.
Embers is gifted with magick and it was interesting to read about her discovery of what she was able to do and to what extent were the force of her powers. The paranormal aspect of the story was written extremely well and different, as mentioned before. The reader won't want to stop reading until the book ends. It keeps drawing your attention and leaving you in this world of paranormal magick.
If you are not a fan of paranormal or angel stories, I advise you to read EMBERS. It is definitely dark and extremely interesting. You will love this story and will want more when the book ends. This series will be a fantastic one.

As I’ve said before, I have been a fan of Karen Ann Hopkin’s writing since I read her first book, Temptations. Her previous books are contemporary – all centered around Amish communities so I was even more intrigued to read her newest book which is a paranormal romance!
I liked Ember, the main character, a lot in fact. She loved animals, which instantly warmed me to her character within the first chapter. She was also really loyal and protective of anyone that meant anything to her. You see this especially later on in the story, with the girls that she was friends with. I did find it hard to understand some of Ember’s reactions and feelings though. For one, I thought it was strange that she never contacted Piper (her best friend back at home) or her brother, Timmy. They were featured in the first of the book (until she moved with Ila) and it was obvious that Ember was very close to both of them. They were hardly mentioned once she moved away, and while I understand that she had quite a bit going on (a small understatement perhaps!) I thought it was odd that she didn’t even contact them. Another thing that I just couldn’t wrap my head around was how she put herself into danger so irrationally. I could get how it happened the first time, but then again? It puzzled me. That being said, as much as Ember confused me at times, I still really liked her character! Now Sawyer was someone who just confused me… and in fact I’m still not entirely sure of him. I like him for Ember, but I found it hard to get attached to him. I thought he was really posessive, which goes with him being a Demon, but it still irked me a bit. He too though was really loyal to those he cared about. Ivan and Ila were two of my absolute favorites. I thought Ivan was such a sweet kid, and it almost seemed like he had a bit of a crush on Ember and Ila was just AWESOME. Such a quite, seemingly sweet old lady but she was a bit of a bad ass underneath! And she loved animals and had a special connection with them so of course that again, made me instantly love her.
Embers is told in both Ember and Sawyer’s point of view. I really enjoyed this, especially when it got farther into the story. It really gave the story the wow factor during some of the intense action towards the end as well as it really gave both perspective’s of what was happening. It was really interesting to see the story through both a Demon and a Watcher’s eyes and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Embers is definitely an action packed story. There is constantly something happening and I never felt a lull in the storyline at any point. It also is an incredibly unique paranormal book, I can’t say I’ve read anything like it ever. I’ve read Angel and Demon books before but it really set itself a side with some interesting elements.
The ending shocked me. I was so sad, and my heart was hurting for Ember… but at the same time I wasn’t entirely shocked because the story kind of gives you this end of it all vibe from the get go. I loved the ending though and it has the perfect ramp up for the next book. I have no idea where it’s going to go from here but I will definitely be continuing the series. Another awesome book from Karen Ann Hopkins!

Finally, a supernatural story to immerse myself into and thoroughly enjoy! Karen Ann Hopkins has come up with some very unique characters - angels and demons, like no other!
I couldn't help but find a few Twilight similarities, with the exception that Ember is already a supernatural, and that there is definitely no love-triangle in this story; the insta-love and precautions to it are there, the setting and the 'evil-doers' are all quite relatable. However, the main plot to the story is different, unique and very interesting...
After the tragic loss of her parents, Ember is sent to go stay with her "Aunt" Ila on a somewhat remote mountain in Tennessee. Having no choice but to go, Ember quickly realizes that this is exactly where she needs to be right now. Ila has answers that have been plaguing Ember for months now. And as she learns about her true nature and all of the overwhelming information that goes along with it, Ember never falters and continues to learn and strive.
Ember is a Watcher.
A Watcher is a descendent of angels. Each Watcher has their own kind of elemental power; sometimes being able to control more than one element. And even without any knowledge or proper training, Ember is a very, very strong Watcher. She must reign in her power or risk being consumed by it. And of course, through it all, she must also continue to integrate with the local humans and must forgo home-school and start public school as soon as possible.
And this is where she meets Ivan... a Growler.
Which then leads her to meet, Sawyer... a Demon.
Out of curiosity for one another, this trio quickly become friends. And soon find out that the end of the world is almost here and that they are all about to enter a war... Good vs. Evil. And know one knows where their loyalties will lie.
The author really impressed me with all of the details, small and large! Every single mention of any sort of being, setting, behavior, etc. is important. The world-building and character growth is compelling, unique and mesmerizing. Do not dismiss anything, or you may miss something important. The Watchers history, is so intriguing. The pacing of the story is crucial, the book starts slow and steady - there is a lot of information to take in. And as we learn and grow right along with our main characters, the story starts to pick up and move along at a good page-turning pace. What I really enjoyed the most is that what you see is never all that you are going to get. There are so many grey-areas within each character, you're always left in suspense as to what they may or may not do.
EMBERS sets us up for what is going to be a captivating and thrilling series. There are so many different ways that the story can go. I am really, really looking forward to watching Ember grow and move on with her story.

I had heard such amazing things about Karen Ann Hopkins before and I have always wanted to try one of her books, but I didn't think I should start with the Amish series Temptation because I wasn't sure that would be my thing. As soon as I saw Embers though, I knew I had to get in on that book. The cover grabbed my eye instantly, and the fact that Embers was said to be a dark and gritty paranormal was more than enough to make me super excited about it. And now I can say that I know what everyone was talking about. Not only was Embers a great story, but Karen Ann Hopkins is a phenomenal writer. Her writing really makes a story, and especially the character jump right off the page.
Embers is first and foremost a story about Angels. But I am super happy to report that Karen's angels are her own. This was unlike other angel books that I have tried. The line between good and evil was not always so clear, and it made the story so unique and interesting. Ember herself was a treat. And this is also where Karen Ann Hopkins writing started to really impress me. You can tell so much thought and planning went into the character development for all of the characters. Ember was so fleshed out and real. She could have walked right off the page, which might have freaked me out a bit considering the world she was coming from. Just sayin'. But I would like to meet someone with her power. She has an afinity for fire and the things she can do are wicked cool.
The romance was a little light for my liking, but there was so many other things going on that you don't even really notice that it was on the lighter side until you are done with the book. I was so drawn into this world, I want the next book in my hands right now. (and I also want some more romance in the next one, but with all of the solid foundation work she did here, I think that will happen as the series unfolds.) I know angel books are hit or miss for a lot of people, myself included. I have read some that worked for me and some not so much. But Embers was a hit! Even if you are not a fan of angels, I would urge you to try Embers. There are tons of twists and turns to keep you guessing, the take on angels is different and the book really did feel dark and gritty, like it was pitched to be. It was such an interesting mixture. I can't wait to see what comes next in the Wings of War series.
