This book has two crime storylines going on at once and as they bounce back and forth the author does an outstanding job ratcheting up the tension and suspense. The technique she uses to do so is brilliant.
This book picks up two months after the tragic events of the last book. Hillary is finally set to return to work the next day after having been off on compassionate care leave following the murder of her close friend and boss Mel. When she shows up to work to check things out she is unhappy to find a man she despises is her new boss having taken Mel’s place. We don’t know the story yet but it’s sure to be a doozy. Then she ends up with a murder case before she leaves for the day so she’s thrown in to everything a day early. And Hillary knows she is not herself. Then on top of everything, they still haven’t caught Mel’s killer even though everyone knows who did it. Outsiders have been brought in to investigate. And now Mel’s pregnant widow, Hillary’s former DS Janine is at the end of her tether and Hillary knows she has to do something she shouldn’t (get involved in the investigation) in order to prevent Janine from doing something truly reckless and dangerous. In short, Hillary is under a lot of pressure.
The murder case is a confusing one. They can’t hone in on a suspect and Hillary is clearly off her game. Plus her team is distracted as well. And it seems every time she might be getting somewhere on her case Janine calls and Hillary has to go running off to prevent her from doing something stupid.
The best part of the book is how the author tortures us by the way she turns the dial up to 11 on the tension and suspense. As both plot lines appear to be moving towards their conclusions, the author makes the scenes shorter and shorter as we jumper from locale to locale. I was on pins and needles waiting for the big finale. It was masterfully done.
We ultimately get the ending to both crimes but once again the author leaves us with several questions hanging in the air that could have dire consequences. I’m going to be very interested to see how book 10 begins and to learn more about how some of the questions get resolved.

This is book 9 in the Hillary Green series and they just get better and better. Still grieving after the death of her colleague and friend Hillary has returned to work after two months leave and straight into a murder case. Sixty five year old Edward Philpott has been found dead in his back garden of the house he shared with his widowed daughter, Rachel, and her two children. Hillary also has to keep her former sergeant Janine in check - recently widowed and pregnant she is desperate to be involved in the investigation into her husband’s death. Really enjoyed this book from start to finish - I couldn’t put it down. Absolutely love the series and can’t wait for book 10.

Edward Philpott is found bludgeoned to death in his beautiful garden. The man seems to have no enemies, apart from a rival gardener. The case has Hillary and her team stumped. With the arrival of a former enemy, Hillary is under more pressure than ever to close this case but she is not working at her best. Will she solve the case?
This series I have to say keeps getting better and better! I’ve been in a bit of a reading funk these last couple of weeks, reading but not really enjoying things but this book knocked that right out of me. I was hooked from the first page. In an ideal world I would have just sat and read it from beginning to end in one sitting but unfortunately, eating, sleeping and generally taking care of my family got in the way.
I will say if you haven’t read the previous book, Murder In The Mansion before reading this one, you really should. I personally didn’t and OMG did I get such a shock at the beginning! I’m not going to tell you what happens but I think you should read the synopsis first.
I feel really sorry for Hillary. She’s not herself and with the hiring of new superintendent Brian Vane, an old enemy of hers, it doesn’t seem to be looking up for her. On a positive note, she may well be seeing the back of DS Frank Ross, a constant thorn in her side.
There is never a dull moment in this book, it was emotional, tense and gripping. I can’t wait to see what Faith does with this series next!

Two months have passed and DI Hillary Greene is back at work. Only to be given a case straightaway. Edward Philpott has been found dead in his garden. Still not feeling her usual self and no apparent motive, and with the continuing case of her friend Mellow she feels at a lose in the case.
Another good story in this well-written series. Again I look forward to the next.

I received a copy of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley.
Not one of the better instalments in this series. The plot is divided between Hillary (being uncharacteristically alternately angry and disinterested) investigating the murder of an elderly man in his garden, and the attempt by the outside investigating team to prove Clive Myers murdered Mel. Hillary is dragged into the latter by her attempts to prevent the widowed Janine from interfering. I have read each of the previous instalments, so I'm not sure how well this novel would stand on its own, but I have my doubts...
The murder plot was fairly uninteresting and the solution underwhelming. The Myers story was more interesting, but we kept being torn away from it. I'm glad Hillary confronted Gemma about the dirty money. I need Keith to ditch his hideous boyfriend already. One of the attractions of this series for me is that Hillary is unapologetically good at her job, so her faltering here - what an error of judgment in the way she treated Ross, for example - was disappointing.
Still, I will keep going.
