Enjoyed this very much and found it suspenseful. Catherine's character arc is the best part. I don't know why modern readers don't rate Henry James more highly on average. You either love him or hate him. Very subtle storyteller. The Portrait of a Lady is one of my favorite novels.

I got over the "will they - won't they" however I must give flowers to Henry James as given the time period in which he is writing and being able to create a strong willed female protagonist is pretty incredible.

Read the 1959 Bantam Classics paperback which isn't available on here as option. A perfect back pocket book for commuting.

James writes a simplistic on-the-surface novel in terms of plot, but reading between the lines and soaking in James’ language reveals a poignant subtlety in the subject matter. This was my first James, and I think it’s the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Me, reading this book:

Must not punch Mrs. Penniman.
