I went into this book having no idea what to expect and I loved that I was hooked right from the start. There was no “oh read 100 pages and then you will care about the story”. This one had me wanting to know more the second I started reading!

I loved that this book had an interesting take on the common kidnapped theme of books. Instead of the entire books being about Lily’s time being held captive and the end being her escaping, this author chose to focus on what happens AFTER the escape. Will Lily ever feel normal again? Will Justice be served? How does Lily’s family handle it? Etc. I loved seeing this part of the story because usually you are just happy when the character escapes and then are left wondering what happened to them as they adjusted back into normal life.

Good. A bit predictable, but still a fast compelling read. Not a book for my middle school shelves

I borrowed this book from the library, and realized with horror that it was labeled with a “thriller” label. I almost didn’t read it, because that genre is typically not my jam. But I couldn’t put it down after reading the first chapter. If you enjoy true crime or murder podcasts, you’ll enjoy this book!

This book was pretty good but almost too similar to "Room." The real difference was the focus. "Room" spent more time on the captivity and the details about escaping whereas "Baby Doll" starts with the escape and focuses more on what happens after. I enjoyed the book overall.

Escaping from her captor, Lily adjusts to life after being a victim of kidnapping, rape, and abuse-- among other things. Now with her daughter, Sky, Lily must adapt to what her life is eight years after being abducted. Told from Lily's mother's point of view, Lily's twin sister, Lily herself, as well as her captor, this tells the stories of the lives that take place after Lily returns home.
I wasn't sure how I felt about this book at first but it was a very well written story. From the different points of view, to the pain and hurt you're able to feel through the characters. No character in this book is perfect. I found myself frustrated with some of them and angry about their actions, but I realized that they were written TO be flawed. They all have things they don't do correct and they all make mistakes. That's what makes this story relatable, even if you've never known a kidnapping victim or were never kidnapped, the author does a great job at making sure the readers relate to the characters. Very well done!
