~The Butcher~Fifth Republic Series Book 2~Penelope Sky~

~Dual Narration~Ramona Master & Michael Ferraiuolo~

~I'm all for a morally grey MMC but I'm just not vibing with this one & I don't really care for the fmc either. I liked the MMC in book 1 but in this one, he just seems like a whiny, immature narcissist who brags about running the city when he can't stop thinking about how others fear him for five seconds.

I also love spice in books but the spice in this one is just repetitive it feels like the same scene & words were just repeated every few chapters so even though it was high in spice it lacked in execution. Usually, a cliffhanger makes me want to continue a series but this one just didn't do it for me.

The dual narration was good & I felt like each narrator voiced their characters well! The only thing I would change is making it Duet vs Dual only because the accent that the butcher has wasn't incorporated in the FMCS parts.

~As Always Happy Reading~

In the continuation of the Fifth Republic series, Fleur has more confidence in herself and is moving forward with her divorce from Adrian. We are also given more back story about Bastien, the type of family he was raised in, and the life he was expected to lead.

The stakes are a little higher, with Bastienโ€˜s lifestyle presenting more danger both to himself and to Fleur. As the danger gets closer, we also learn more about the hierarchy of the criminal underworld that Bastien appears to be the head of.

I think the writing is done very well. I appreciate the short length because we get to major plot points at a faster pace, which is what I am personally looking for in a darker romance. I also liked the dual narration of the audiobook. Both the MMC and FMC narrators were great and easy to understand.

While I did enjoy this, it wasnโ€™t fully what I was looking for in this type of novel. I didnโ€™t really buy into the relationship between Fleur and Bastien in the first book, and I still didnโ€™t quite feel the chemistry in the first half of this one. I believe this is due to my own personal preferences (for example, I was not a fan of how Bastien treated/acted toward Fleur after the first hiccup of their relationship). I did feel the chemistry got better in the second half and I did genuinely believe that they had deep feelings for each other as they grew closer.

I am actually far more interested in the criminal underworld storyline that is going on. I think that is being fleshed out very well and with how this ends on a cliffhanger, I am interested to keep reading and find out what happens next.

Dark, intense, and addictive. The Carver pulls you into a world of danger, obsession, and unexpected love. The chemistry is off the charts, and the slow unraveling of the heroโ€™s cold heart is everything. If you love possessive antiheroes and emotional tension, this oneโ€™s for you.

This second book delves deeper into Bastien's backstory, and we get to experience even more emotional layers to their romance. Despite Fleur's doubts about their relationship, Bastien is determined to be with her. He's essentially offering his world to her on a silver platter. Itโ€™s that badass energy that makes Bastien's character irresistible, and Iโ€™m here for it!

๐ŸŽงThe icing on the cake was the dual narration by ๐‘๐š๐ฆ๐จ๐ง๐š ๐Œ๐š๐ฌ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ and ๐Œ๐ข๐œ๐ก๐š๐ž๐ฅ ๐…๐ž๐ซ๐ซ๐š๐ข๐ฎ๐จ๐ฅ๐จ. Both narrators easily brought the characters and their emotions to life. Fans of mafia romance and morally grey male leads will most definitely love this series!

For me The Carver was better than book 1, The Butcher.
Honestly, I think it was because book 2 focuses more on Bastien, his backstory, and his 'job'. It was way more interesting than Fleur's whiney story to me.
There was more plot, and less spice, but in a good way. The spice that is there is decent.
Not a lot happens to progress the story until the end where there is the first sign of action so far.
I liked it, but didn't love it. I will want to continue as the end intrigued just enough to want to see what happens next.

Thank you to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for the Audio ARC.

This was a good book. I liked the MMC he was tough and seemed to stick to what he said. The FMC got on my nerves some always running away at any sign of trouble. I get having your safety in mind but he was upfront from the beginning and I feel she takes too long to make up her mind even after saying she is ok with his life. That may just be me. All in all it was a good story and I wouldnโ€™t let my small problem with the FMC stop you from reading it.
