Una storia coniugale difficile, che si rompe a causa di un tradimento ma poi si riprende, si "riallaccia", senza però mai corrispondersi del tutto. Starnone indaga sui rapporti personali come pochi, sprofonda nelle coscienze arrivando a toccare i sentimenti più puri ed essenziali. I lacci sono un simbolo della famiglia: i figli imparano ad allacciarsi le scarpe osservando il padre, come allo specchio. Ma i lacci sono anche quelli che tengono legati una famiglia che, senza, sarebbe frammentata in mille pezzi. Spesso i lacci diventano una catena, una gabbia da cui non si riesce a fuggire, una via apparentemente comoda e confortevole ma piena di increspature. Alla fine, per quanto doloroso, slegarsi potrebbe essere la scelta più giusta, per evitare di distruggere noi stessi e quello che resta noi, i figli.
