Wow. This book contains more raw heart and soul than you can imagine. These poems were real and open and honest. I think Cyrus Parker definitely has a bright future as a poet, especially if he keeps it as real as he has so far. Lilting and beautiful poetry that is both sincere and relatable.

This is hard to rate, as I didn't care for most of it and then really related to a few poems.

I enjoyed reading about a man's perspective on heartbreak, and redemptive love. While I felt that some of Cyrus Parker's poems were a bit trite, I think this collection is well done with heartfelt emotions and vulnerability. I've read a lot of his wife's poetry and I loved to see his side of their love story.

Truthful, well thought out, and beautiful. The first half is heartbreaking and all too familiar to many of us. The second is the perfect telling of how falling for someone isn't a magic cure to past pain, but that through trust and love people can lift each other up and inspire growth and incredible change.

I love this way too much. That last poem was the perfect way to end the collection. My only mistake was getting this from the library because now I want to go through it and highlight all my favorite lines but you cant do that when the book isnt yours.

I did enjoy this but sadly it didn't leave me as emotionally moved as I hoped to feel for poetry. They felt very hit or miss to me, with some being amazing and I ended up loving and others leaving little to no impact.

This book has so much heart. It lives and breathes with its author, it draws in with emotion and a story that is all-too-familiar for so many of us. I especially love Cyrus's wordplay and use of shapes and spacing in many of his pieces. Something as simple as moving one single word to the opposite side of the page carries so much weight in these poems. His style is concise and poignant, and his voice holds a tone that will surely resonate with so many readers. You can flip through the pages and go "yes, I know what that feels like" and instantly feel just a little bit less alone. This is a beautiful debut collection from a wonderful poet - can't wait to see more from such an honest and open mind.

DROPKICKromance is a poetry book that read as a story. Cyrus Parke writing is addictive. I read this in just two settings. He style is a joy that pulled me in. I bookmarked many lines because they were just that good. My favorite ones can towards the end of the book. Along with the poems about writing and books, made me feel because I can relate to the passion for words. His poems are truthful, clever wordplay and moving. His poetry is a joy to read.

I received a NetGalley ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. This doesn't in any way influence my opinion on it. So, this is a 100% honest review by me.

I liked this quite a lot--I definitely relate especially to the first half, where the toxic relationship is almost suffocating. However, I do think the style is so copycat to his wife's that it loses something of his own voice in the process. I always love the base of the poem, and then end up skipping the "subtitle" part.

Full review over on my blog.

This book hit me hard in the feels, and it kept hitting me at unexpected times throughout the entire thing. I would think I was past the things that were going to strike a chord, and then another one would come along. While I’ve followed Cyrus Parker on social media for at least a couple of years, and have seen some of his poetry in that time, I was not at all prepared for this book or for how much I would relate to some of the poems. My tablet died halfway through reading this, and I was happy about it because it forced me to take a break and pull myself together before diving back in.

I went through a lot of emotions while reading this, and it wasn’t a bad thing. It was kind of cathartic, actually. I felt some anger, sympathy, empathy, hope, happiness, nostalgia, and sadness, and honestly sometimes I think I felt all of those at once. Weirdly, I only got teary-eyed during the first half of the book, but during the second half I was ugly crying all over my tablet. I think those were mostly happy-tears, though.

This collection is so brutally honest and heartbreaking (at least in the beginning), but beautifully written, and I can’t remember the last time I went through a poetry book so quickly. (I usually end up reading one over the course of 2-5 days in small chunks.) If my tablet hadn’t died when it did, I would have read this in one sitting for sure.

I’ve been anxiously waiting for this book for about a year, and it was so worth the wait. I was looking forward to it, but also nervous and worried I wouldn’t like it, or wouldn’t love it. Those fears turned out to be completely unfounded, because I. Freaking. LOVED this book. It’s definitely made my list of all-time-favorite poetry collections (and probably books, in general), and I’m dying to get a physical copy.

Do I recommend it? Heck yes I do! Cyrus Parker is a talented poet and I’m looking forward to reading more from him in the future.
