I received a free copy from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is Cyrus Parker's debut poetry collection and it was SO GOOD. I don't think you can really tell that it is a debut, it was so good. His poems are extremely heartfelt and every emotion portrayed in them was an emotion I felt while reading, which I always love to experience when reading poetry.

Was fortunate enough to access an advanced copy of DROPKICKromance through NetGalley. Cyrus hit me right in the feels many times. His poetry is raw, emotional, inspiring, and frankly beautiful. I strongly reccomend this book!

I cannot explain how much I LOVED this poetry collection !!! I was reading it while in the waiting room at my doctor's office, trying to fight back tears. The tears won by the way, all these strangers were looking at me but I didn't care. Cyrus put so much emotion into his writing. You can feel all the pain and heartache he endures in the beginning. The first half of the book tells the story of an abusive long distance relationship. His words are beautiful and you could tell he put a lot of himself into this book. The second half of the book was about his wife Amanda, who is the Author of  The Princess Saves herself in this one. Knowing this section was about her, made the connection I felt to the poems all the more powerful. Amanda wrote a the forward to the book and it was so touching. Cyrus and Amanda are such a loving and inspirational couple, they are also very nice people!!

This is a poetry collection about the path of healing, the journey to self discovery, and love. Cyrus writes with raw honesty, that makes his book stand out from other collections.I honestly can't wait for more book's from him in the future, he is definitely a favorite poet of mine. Pick up a copy of this book, I promise you wont be disappointed.

I do think it's still a good book, however the poems begin to seem monotonous and repetitive after a while.

TW: toxic romantic relationship

we found each other
in darkness
and made our own light.
together, we burned
brighter than anything
that awaited us
on the other side.
-the sun has nothing on you.

I think a lot of people will relate to Parker's words, even if I quite couldn't. They speak from a place of the heart that has known disappointment from a failed relationship, and from the hope of finding themselves again.

It is quite reminiscent of Lovelace's writing style but the author's voice remains their own. I am intrigued to see what else they will write in the future.

how can it be
that the moon is surrounded
by all of the stars
in the nighttime sky
and yet
it still looks so isolated
from the rest of the universe
around it?

There's just something about witnessing book bloggers that I've followed (and admired from affair) for years being able to follow their dreams that gives me the warm and fuzzies. I cannot think of a better group of people to see thrive and accomplish the very best. While I don't know Cyrus Parker or Amanda Lovelace on a personal level, there's something so very satisfying about seeing them become such a prominent part of the poetry community. #OTP

DROPKICKromance is, hands down, one of the best releases in poetry this year. And to put it bluntly one of the best modern poetry debuts, well, ever. Parker weaves together a tale of love and loss, of destruction and the rebuilding of one's self. DROPKICKromance is a story of coming of age; of life and its changes, of the toxic and the journey that follows. Cyrus Parker holds back no punches when it comes to his exploration of self, the heartache of the past and the hope of the future. You see the pain of one relationship as it tries to engulf him; the aftermath, the recovery and the path that leads Parker to where--readers sense--he was meant to be all along.

(Not to mention who he was meant to be.)

Which makes the collection all the more satisfying and relatable to readers of all walks of life. Parker doesn't hold back. And this is why it is such a successful release.

There's a lot to DROPKICKromance that will compel readers to keep their eyes to his prose. As I sat here, skimming over the pages I marked within the book, I couldn't quite bring my thoughts to paper. Or, er, blogger. I kept circling in on the fact that Cyrus Parker's writing accomplished so much more than many other men (who are brilliant in their own right, of course) in the writing community had in ages.

Something that they failed to express. Then, I stumbled upon the review of DROPKICKromance that Alicia Cook (author of Stuff I've Been Feeling Lately; one of my all-time favourite poetry collections ever) and she explained it far better than I ever could:

Parker is not speaking for women, and I don't think he is writing in the hopes of garnering thousands of women fans. He's telling how two women changed HIS life (one for worse, one for better), not the other way around.

Parker never uses his past, present or future as background noise to a bigger picture. He handles it all with care and honesty. Much like Cook said, he doesn't speak for the women he's known; the story is merely how they came to change him.

This is without a doubt his story.

There's something in the way he expresses himself that is inclusive and hopeful. In all the bleakness that came through the rough notes of his life, there's just something about the way that he has carried himself through--the way he crafted DROPKICKromance--that is utterly inspirational.

Cyrus Parker is a voice that commands to be heard.

And you should definitely listen.

"blowing up bridges is always better when someone else is pushing the button with you" - explosions make for great first dates" - Cyrus Parker, DROPKICKromance

TW: emotional abuse

I related to Parker so much while reading DROPKICKromance. His poems are so genuine, and it spoke to me. Not much more to say, really.

"You gave me books and showed me how to live
A thousand and one lives
You gave me a pen and showed me
How to write this one"

I really appreciated Cyrus Parker's writing voice.

They had such an open vulnerability of inviting one into their heartache and their love.

I am not a huge fan of more villainized poetry but I did enjoy most of these poems. There are some that hit in me in the feels. Some that ached and some that stirred hope.

I especially loved the bookish poems

DROPKICKromance is one of those books that makes a deep, deep impact on you and leaves you reeling with its beauty. The writing in this poetry collection is so honest and truthful that it made fall in love with it almost immediately. I think I was about 3 poems in when I decided that I loved it already. I was a little scared to move ahead after that because I didn’t want to not like it. So, I stopped myself from devouring it quickly like I wanted to, instead reading at a more leisurely pace, which I think added to my experience of the book.

Though the first half of the collection is about a relationship that the author was in for almost eight years, but which was all kinds of toxic and he realized that all too late because he thought he was in love and he believed they could make it work. That part was so heartbreaking to read because all this sad stuff kept happening and I just wanted to go inside the book and give the writer a huge, tight hug and just make him feel better.

But, then, the main romance started and I was all smiles and sighs and swoons! It was so beautiful. I absolutely fell in love with the words in this section. The way the relationship is described and the way both of them supported each other through the good and the bad is kind of inspirational. These two people are totally hashtag relationship goals. I adored their relationship so very much!

So, yes, this book is absolutely amazing and I love it and I know you will love it so please go and preorder this and then read it ASAP when it comes out because you absolutely have to do it, okay?
