however, it was a really enjoyable concept with an interesting take on the dark academia genre. the shock twist that
nevertheless, i still enjoyed it a fair amount and will pick up the sequel when it's available in paperback. if you can stomach the writing style, definitely give this one a shot.

the characters (for the most part) are all awful to each other for most of the book so if you don't wanna read about six adults struggling to get along then skip this one lmaoerinfitzharris's review against another edition

The rating is mostly for what the book could be, I wouldn’t recommend it particularly and I doubt I’ll be continuing with this series.

⁕ Did you know that this book is listed in the dictionary under Dramatic Irony? Just kidding... but seriously, the reader knows key information almost too in advance of the characters. It made the plot DRAG at points instead of building tension.
⁕ The magic system developed by Blake is so refreshing. The influence of physics and the differences between how each of the different mediums interact with the same concepts of time and space was unlike anything I've ever read before.
⁕ This book is stuffed with amoral, flawed characters -- each with their own juicy motivations and fears. They feel so distinct from one another across 6 different POVs.

I wanted to come back to this book to review because why not and maybe I will do more reviews like this, probably not though.
The characters are all pretentious assholes, there I said it, but they all have their flaws and things that make you like them a little bit at least.
Though I did expect everyone to kiss in this book or be a thing, I was like these two should date, not these two. but whoever gets with who I am just having a good time that is for sure.
I resonated with Libby more than I thought I would, but her anxiety really came through and her just asking all the questions to be absolutely sure of something, that is me all over.
The only character that I ever had trouble liking out of the main 6 was Callum and I am hoping for that to change in the second book because there is definitely more to him than we get to see. But if not oh well I will continue to root for the others over him. no biggie.
Give me fantasy elements, dark academia and asshole characters that have to interact, and I am probably gonna have a great time!! I am excited to see where this series will take us too next

This is definitely a predominantly character-driven novel, but the characters are so interesting and lushly written that it often feels like so much is going on anyway (even though it isn't really). It's one of those books where you feel like you can't really trust anyone as they all have ulterior motives (morally gray). It's very mysterious in their motives coming to light, and learning more about all the characters magical abilities.
Also def everyone is queer, like there's no question in my mind that this will develop in the next books...
I cannot wait for the continuation of the series!

Moderate: Adult/minor relationship, Gun violence, Hate crime, Suicide, Toxic relationship, Violence, and Mass/school shootings

Many of the above moderate TW are described in past tense (fairly vaguely) as part of character's background stories.
