Reading the first pages I didn't have many expectations but I was nicely surprised by the complexity of the characters. Now I am kind of curious about how will the story continue, although the revelation made me feel like the antagonist turned into a simple caricature of a villain (hopefully their motivations and personality will be further explored so they feel more complex and interesting)

objectively 3.5⭐, subjectively 5⭐ because i'm clawing the walls thinking about these characters. 4.25⭐ feels about right

i wanted something vaguely similar to tvd/ove by chloe gong and i wanted characters being petty and arguing a lot. i got it and i had an incredible time with it >:)

really the only thing that genuinely bothered me was the way the second-to-last chapter was formatted. it would've been such an interesting revelation from anyone else's pov, but the way it was just laid out for the reader felt quite underwhelming. still a good plot twist though, and i'm very intrigued to see where it leads!

side note on the pairings:
why nico and libby enemies to lovers????? when gideon and nico have literally the most tender friendship i've read in a while?????? when they clearly love each other too much and would AND CONTINUOUSLY DO everything for each other?????? i'm the first to appreciate a well-written friendship but like. come ON. if they don't end up together i will riot. it's nico and libby's friendship that i actually want to see, enemies to friends is simply superior

I really wish we had gotten to see more of Reina’s backstory (haven’t seen any spoilers for TAP so I don’t know if they go more into her in that book). All of the characters are so interesting, and I’m OBSESSED with how everyone has such good chemistry with one another. It’s such a good book.

This book was a good trip for me. I know it’s been a little bit polarizing, and I can easily see this May not work for everyone.
➡️The writing is extremely cerebral & academic. (I even had to look up some words for their meaning.) This made sense for me, though, because it’s about the 6 best medeians (magicians) in the world, who are all very intelligent & clearly at the top of their respective magical areas.
➡️ None of the characters are likable.  Hence, the categorization of a book in dark academia.  This doesn’t mean they aren’t redeemable. I saw glimpses of improving humanity as the story progressed, so I’m hoping the second book continues this evolution.
➡️Although the page numbers aren’t high, it’s a longer book. The print & margins are small.
➡️While not sexually graphic, there ARE a couple of scenes I wasn’t prepared for. All consensual, but not my cup of tea.

I’m Looking forward to the second book! As a reader who is fairly new to fantasy & magical reads, I highly recommend!

While I wanted to really love this book, I just couldn’t really get into it. It had great potential, but the pacing of the book was all over the place and I couldn’t really relate to any of the characters (except maybe Libby a little bit). The author would go on for pages talking in circles and using really flowery language that I found to be unnecessary. I would say that last 100 pages or so is when the plot actually picked up and I started to somewhat enjoy it, but the plot was still unclear at points due to the unneeded flowery prose. The characters were really hard to like—it felt like if you put a bunch of stuck up pureblood slytherins in a room together.
I felt like Reina was a character with so much wasted potential. Libby and Nico’s potential academic-rivals-to-lovers arc was the one thing that kept me reading, and even THAT didn’t come to fruition when it felt so obvious. Not sure if that is explored in the next book, but I doubt I will end up reading it to find out.
