I felt this was too long and I hard a hard time differentiating Callum and Tristan at first, but I still enjoyed it.

I liked the twist at the end, and didn’t predict what it was, which doesn’t often happen. I had an inkling, but was surprised by the details.

I’m excited to read the next book to see what happens in their second year.

Started out somewhat repetitive and the characters felt like flat archetypes. However, the novel progresses into a different direction than I expected and lays out some very interesting collisions of magic and science. Long read, but the ideas of the book rumble around in my head even after I've set it down !

How can an interesting concept with dark academia, magic, and a secret society go wrong?
Pacing. It was so. damn. slow.

Every decade, six of the most talented magicians are chosen to compete against each other for initiation into the Alexandrian Society. Unfortunately I didn’t love any of the characters. This is not to say that I hated them, but I definitely didn’t love them or feel connected to anyone in particular after the first ~100 pages.

While the premise really was interesting, the execution just wasn’t there for me, which is too bad because I wanted to love it. In hindsight, this book seems like mostly world-building and character development for the rest of the series, but I needed more. I’m not sure if I’ll be picking up book two yet, only time will tell.

Honestly don't like dnf'ing books half way through the story but I don't see myself getting interested nor picking up this book anytime soon. In the off chance I do, I would probably still be bored with the story. The beginning and some POV chapters were quite interesting but other than that the plot moves awfully slow for me. Gonna return to the library bc ik someone might enjoy it more.

Though I might look into spoilers to see if anything happens 🫣

Felt like the author conceived it in the same world as The Magicians. Libby's initial narrative is so juvenile that I planned to return the book to the library. Gave it a second chance and it does become a thoughtful, reflective, interesting book instead of a middle school writing level enemies to lovers. But I never quite fell in love with the narration. I love magic and urban fantasy, love dark academia, love dark fantasy. But this didn't hit. I didn't find the plot to be compelling, not was I vested in any of the characters. The author spent a good portion of time fleshing out their thoughts and reasons, but I didn't feel like I have a shit tbh. The twist at the end makes me somewhat curious, but it was basically the first time in the book I felt curious what would happen next, and I don't think I'm interested enough to pursue the next book.

Not to say it's an awful book by any means. I've certainly read MUCH worse. The writing quality is fine (if not beautiful), the characters are passably well developed (even if they didn't really grow at all), the concept is interesting (though the pacing needs work). The writing made me think of Erin Morgenstern, though less poetic, and I had similar issues with the pacing in her books.

A book that I surprisingly enjoyed even though it was heavily focused on the character dynamics (multiple povs). If you love a scientifically based magic system, diverse characters and a mysterious plotline this book is for you. Sometimes it seems slow-moving but it is all worth it for the cliffhanger in the end. All in all, we can agree that all of the characters are extremely hot (Parisa!!!) and we need to support Nico x Gideon. I cannot wait to read the sequel (sadly my friend will have to read it first :()

Ps: Thank you to my friend Tyler for recommending and lending me this book. Love you ^^
