Would almost give it a 5 star rating. Wasn't expecting the heaviness of the WWII Nazi occupied France but I should have. Loved how the two stories intertwined.

24 hour reading marathon. I was led to this book after learning about the Wild Purge after a clip in the miniseries Band of Brothers. Ann Mah does a wonderful job of weaving in history, secrets, wine culture, and the still looming presence of Nazi occupation generations later. Beautifully done.

“The wine sleeps in the bottle, but still it is changing—evolving,” Jean-Luc had told us. “And when the cork is removed, it breathes again, and comes awake. Like a fairy tale. Un conte de fées.”

It was...cute. hard to get involved with the characters, and they tended to ramble about random things that never came about. It was tough to tell the difference between the past and present in the audio as the transition wasn't clear.

I found the book very slow to start. I really enjoyed the journal entries and kept wishing for those parts to come sooner. I found the present day parts to be too drawn out. I would have rather focused more on the history of Helene.

I might try to read this again at a later date, but the audiobook really isn’t doing much for me

This book combined two of my favorite things: wine and historical fiction. I loved that the book went back and forth between present day (Kate) and the past (her relatives). Mah did a great job of including twists and relating them all at the end. The book includes French phrases. I enjoyed the audiobook for accurate pronunciation of the words.

Highly recommend.

3.5 rounded up. Entertaining WWII historical fiction with a dual timeline. This one has more focus on the present than the past and I enjoyed learning a lot more about the history of the Burgandy wine region in France. The family mystery at the core of the story kept me guessing until the end. Was a little disappointed in the main love story between Kate and Jean-Luc - found it a little lack luster tbh. Would recommend to fans of the winemaker's wife. Great on audio with the queen of historical fiction, Saskia Maarleveld, as narrator.
