So I would like to start off this review with a confession of sorts, I accidentally read this volume out of its intended order, despite its release being technically out of order as well. After reading volume one and two, I noticed that I passed by volume zero and circled back to it. Historically this book was released after the original Sandman series, to have taken place before the events of the first installment and to explain some plot points to come. Yet, despite this small hiccup my enjoyment of this volume was completely unaffected. In this story we follow Morpheus in his prime as king of dreams when the threat of a mad star wanting the destruction of all life threatens his domain. Morpheus sets out to stop these series of events and takes us along on this fantastical journey through various dimensions and parts of the universe. However because of my unique experience reading this volume, it was apparent to me that this book was leaning more towards the fantasy genre than the horror its been known to perpetuate, especially at the beginning of the Sandman series. Another difference I noticed was the artistic talent present in this book. The illustrations are absolutely stunning as the story telling progresses, showing the obvious mastery acquired by the illustrators throughout this series as well. Overall this was an amazing addition to Sandman and I would highly recommend it, be it before or after the series.
