Quite possibly the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. Worth reading the physical copy to better appreciate the full page spread.

Wow, this is trippy even by Sandman standards! I wonder why it took me so long to finally get around to reading it. A beautiful story, told in even more beautiful art.

I'm honestly mad at myself for owning this book for so long and not reading it. It reminded me in all the right ways of why I liked the Sandman stories in the first place.

I tell myself, I am Dream of the Endless. I am DREAM. And I am prepared for whatever awaits me.

To say this is an acid trip is to disappoint millions of people who have never dropped acid. If you were to read this, then drop acid, you would come back to me to complain. No acid trip in history has ever come close to this prequel and sequel to my beloved Sandman series.

The storyline here is fairly confusing, you kind of have to go along for the ride, like a young girl traveling on a giant cat. You don't know where you're going, but the cat seems to, so ::shrug:: okay.

The world is ending. The universe is ending. Dream is responsible, and Dream is determined to stop it. With the help of a giant cat who is also Dream.

It should be noted straight off the bat that my girl Death gets such little page time as to make me want to drop this to two stars, but that would be desperately unfair and I would never.

The art style outweighs the story telling here. I imagine Neil's story is easier to understand for the simple fact that so much of it is told through imagery, rather than words. Which is a problem for my boring brain.

But that being said, the story is incredible, and the art style. The art style is beyond. Absolutely beyond.

I cannot give the artwork in this issue anything less than 5 stars. Incredible. The story was also amazing, one of my favourite sandman stories.

Absolutely exquisite on every level: the art (holy moly, the ART); the storytelling; the characters; the prose. Perfection from start to finish. Honestly, all of the cover art for these issues - and a lot of the multi-page spreads - are good enough to frame and put on display. A divine, must-read prequel to the main Sandman series that ties up everything that happened before the events of the first volume.
