P.S. The s.a. scene was creepy and unneccessary.

i didnt really like the writing style, the author used the word angrily as a descriptor far to much as well as describing people as turning white. and i felt like there wasnt alot of emotion in it, and on top of that i felt like neil was slightly mischaracterized- especially in the beginning of the book. he spoke to neil so rudely- "you cant expect everybody to think of you all the time. nobody knows you. and you never talk to anyone." like that is just not my neil perry.
there were also very slight changes in dialogue that annoyed me, an example that springs to mind is mr keatings speech about why we read and write poetry, parts of it were changed and it just really threw me off idk. on top of that SO MANY great scenes were removes, in fact, nearly all of my favourite scenes just weren't in the book, like the "im being chased by walt whitman" scene, todd throwing his desk set off the rough, neil gazing at todd lovingly after he readshis sweaty-toothed mad man poem, neil and todd fighting each other with scripts,
and on top of all of this they took out all the gay shit like the cute todd and neil moments, charlie serenading knox with his sax, pitts and meeks dancing, meeks' "yes sirs" to charlie, etc, etc. all in all skip this tbh and just watch the movie and deleted scenes. it still made me cry tho and tbh i only really bought it so i could crite the thoreau quote on the opening page but i am still devastatingly disappointed in this

Better thought out and with scenes that really hit. I still got some enjoyment out of reading this book, but the movie was just so much more emotional. The characters more loveable.
And there were some weird scenes written in here to be honest. Like the part with Knox and Chris and the scene where Keating shows questionable photos to some teenage boys. The movie came first and had some great scenes that weren't put in the book but they added these weird and uncomfortable ones??? Like, just no.

If you're looking to simmer in that magical feeling you got from watching DPS, just rewatch the movie instead of starting this book. I picked it up hoping it would add something new to the story, but no luck. 10 out of 15 chapters in and the writing still doesn't evoke any emotion from me. A significant amount of the dialogue is lifted straight from the screenplay yet the novel doesn't seem to explore the dynamic between the boys at all. It's a crying shame that N.H. Kleinbaum was given this gem of a plot and these brilliant characters to work with and the novel turned out to be incredibly disappointing. Had to stop at that absolutely insane assault scene which was completely pointless.
