Much like Disney has done with Maleficient, making a sympathetic origin story for a classic villain can be a challenge. Being a novelization of a film, this book reads almost like a screenplay, including scenes that were obviously written to be more visual than narrative. As with all of these types of books, you're likely better off with the movie in this case. Despite Rudnick turning this story into something readable, the story does drag on and wraps up a little bit too neatly.

A fun novelization of one of my favorite movies of 2021.
I took my hubby on a date to see this movie and have been obsessed ever since! I bought this book and a Cruella funko pop. I love the movie and this book! We seen the movie weeks ago, so it was fun reliving it through this book. Highly recommend!!

This book was a lucky find; I love Disney novels, and I LOVED the Cruella movie. It was a bit tedious to have to read through all of those scenes again, but I did enjoy each character’s unique voice and the extra scenes and lines. Overall, it was good to be transported back into that world. (And Gerald stole the show, don’t even try to deny it.)
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed the movie, and the world and characters it has created.
