I loaned this book to a midshipman in college and never got it back. Hate when that happens.... it was a big expensive book too... and I didn't like it enough to want to buy a new one ;)

I love what David Hume contributes here about emotions, human reasoning, the value of the arts, and great oration/thinking/writing. He suggests that a careful study of the arts cultivates finer discernment.
Once the orator can feel deeply and express himself well to the audience, then the logos of the audience is enhanced and the audience can sense the use eloquence of the orator. The orator is cultivating good taste and judgment because the orator can sense how he must appeal to the audience.
“In the first place, nothing is so improving to the temper as the study of the beauties, either of poetry, eloquence, music or painting. They give a certain elegance of sentiment…The emotions which they excite are soft and tender.”
