Pitch-perfect ode to Wodehouse, via steampunk and A.C. Doyle.

Being a huge fan of PG Wodehouse and the varied and sundry Wooster and Jeeves stories I had my doubts that anyone could pull off a parody. First off, it's hard to parody a parody and second off, the originals are simply brilliant. Suffice it to say that with a touch of Steampunk and a dollop of Sherlock Holmes, Chris Dolley pulls this off. Since there are no more Wooster and Jeeves stories in the offing, I'm happy to settle for Worcester and Reeves.

Every Wodehouse I've ever read would rate at least a three star and most of them would be a five for sure. Likewise the Holmesian canon would be second to none in the particular universe where consulting detectives go to heaven. Imagine the Aunts, the Woosters, the Jeeves of the Wodehousian world, topped up with a nod to Holmes and Watson into a romp through steampunk inspired derring do. But, yes indeed, while something funny this way comes but rarely there's enough plot holes, and weak writing in here to make you miss both Wodehouse and Doyle in spades now :) But this pastiche of sorts does manage to paper over these obvious weaknesses with enough deft quips and situational impasses to keep us hugely entertained most of the time and I imagine as pardodies go it's a great one, but if it was intended as a homage then a bit more work would have done it prouder still. I did like it though ... especially some of it had me chortling away, but I do wish he'd edited out some of the more repetitive slapsticky silliness of Worcester out ... okay the Eunuch was funny the first time around, so was the Orangutan question but when he gets fixated on Sheikhs, and dives deeper into Simian inspired ramblings you have to wonder ... Yes Wooster is a bit of an ass at his very best, but this was a tad over-done here in my opinion, and Reeves lacked the exquisite finesse of Jeeves but hey like I said, it's funny enough to warrant a 3.5 actually if it wasn't for the utter silliness of the plot not really being worthy of a steam punk homage. I mean yeah Germans plotting to take over the world by focusing on Britain was indeed hot stuff turn of the 20'th century but really? Can't do any more without getting into spoilers :)
