There’s definitely some things in this that haven’t aged well and I do have problems with the Baron. But, excluding those things it’s been a long time since I enjoyed something so much that I wanted to go out of my way to write an essay about it. I want to buy another copy of this book, annotate it and analyse everything. There’s a reason this is such a classic sci-fi and I’m honestly annoyed with myself for taking so long to read it.

P.s. If you have trouble getting into this in the beginning Dune part one might help you understand better. I haven’t watched the original adaptation in a decade so I can’t speak for that one.

I can see why this book gets the praise it does, because it has a well constructed plot with great world-building and elegant writing. However, this book wasn't exactly my cup of tea, and perhaps I also missed the bigger picture of the novel as it extends to the real world which I felt the author was trying to convey.

In general, my biggest struggle was that it was difficult to find a character I could relate to and root for (even Paul). Everyone is pretty much painted as cold and calculating, with fairly little emotional depth to make them more human. The only exceptions to this seemed to be the characters of Lady Jessica and Gurney Halleck (and thus they ended up being my favorite characters). The overall story was gritty, dark, and violent which also added to the struggle of getting through the book. I'm grateful for the glossary at the end of the book because while the writing was easy to follow, the terminology as it relates to the fictional world of Dune was complex and often without any context.

Ok but this lived up to the hype!! Frank Herbert very clearly had Tolkien-level worldbuilding skills, and much less random exposition. I'm definitely not smart enough to pick up on all of the themes at play here, but the edition I read had an Afterword by Brian Herbert that helped explain some things. A banger.

Dune is long. And the beginning is a slog through world building exposition. The villain is dark and evil but there’s a lot of monologue talking that can feel boring but it does demonstrate the villain’s scarily evil brilliance. Get past the first half and it starts to get interesting. The last third of the book is what saves it. I hope the second book brings more of the same and it might actually be a good series.
