I love this book! I’ve reread it several times in the last couple of years and it never loses its quick and emotional storyline with an amazing character whom really grows into her power. The world is amazing too - an original mix of Spain and Arabia with an interesting colonialism element. Carson doesn’t shy away from the more serious aspects of the court and shows just how difficult it could be for a foreign princess to marry into a court that still loved their latest queen and were expecting her to be the same. Love it!
Graphic: Eating disorder and Fatphobia
Moderate: Body shaming and Colonisation
Minor: Death, Rape, Violence, and War

I loved this book as a teenager and if anything, that nostalgia is pulling my rating up. Unfortunately the way that race and weight were handled in this were not to my liking at all and are problematic.
Graphic: Death, Eating disorder, Fatphobia, Blood, Kidnapping, Religious bigotry, Fire/Fire injury, and Injury/Injury detail
Moderate: Adult/minor relationship, Infidelity, and Death of parent
Minor: Rape
