I fell in love with this book the moment I opened it in a bookstore and read the line "Like everyone called a woman, they say I had no childhood. They say I rose from the sea fully formed, forced to bear the weight of other people's desire. It's not the truth, but it's close enough."
This book has dark moments, light moments, and is filled with relatable experiences in gut-wrenching poetic detail. It helped me love myself a little more and felt as if I was truly watching Aphrodite interact with Mateer.
If you want a good cry this is the book for you.

I wish I had discovered this poet, this collection sooner. She put words to feelings I’ve been holding for ages with no language available to express them. I am so grateful for this exploration into abuse and violence and the capability for righteous defiance to it through the continued act of love. I’ll be thinking about this for the rest of my life.

I don't like reviewing poetry that is so clearly personal and utilized as personal reflection and healing.

Was this good? Yes.

Was it emotional and inspiring, and did it make me nod along and raise my eyebrows, and even get teary eyed? Yes.

But do I think this was revolutionary, or even saying anything new? No. It isn't.

I just came here to have a good time but I feel called out. This book was somehow written at me but also about me but also in my point of view but also by someone who has no idea who I am. That's how much I related to this book. Now this. This is one of the best poetry books I've read in a while. 10000% deserves the 5 stars I'm giving it.
