This was such an interesting take on vampires, and it’s one that I really enjoyed. Polyamorous vampires, a vaguely regency inspired setting and the undead all come together really well.

I really liked Remy as our protagonist, he’s someone who should have been at the centre of society as the Duke’s heir, and yet he has been forced to the fringes despite his eagerness to prove himself. I think this translates really nicely into a slightly naive character, who doesn’t always notice ulterior motives and also struggles to read others.

What I also really liked is that Xiaodan and Ziden both addressed that the coercive nature of Remy’s previous relationships were abusive, his father forced him into that position with older women in order to gather information, while Remy was a 15 year old who wanted to do what he could.

I do find Chupeco’s writing to be very dense, and this took me much longer to read than other books of a similar length, and that is because there is so much detail in every sentence that it takes a moment to fully comprehend what it is that you are being told. I did find that I was much more engaged with this book in the second half, as I found the first half a little repetitive.

I enjoyed the book by the end but the first two thirds of the book were very slow and difficult for me to get into. Even by the end of the book I found that while I was invested in the plot, I’m not particularly invested in any of the characters.
