Lost interest. I have no doubt Maria Ressa is amazing for all that she’s done. But I was hoping to read about how to stand up to a dictator and not chapters and chapters on anecdotes about how amazing she is.

A very succinct account of the threats that unchecked and largely unregulated corporations with access to our data pose to democracy and human rights more broadly. Written in an accessible manner without being patronising as some key largely academic concepts are discussed. Lots of personal anecdotes that have some light (though perhaps unnecessary) analogy to the text. I consider myself relatively well informed on social media’s influence on politics in US, UK, and some European states, but was lacking in information on its impact in Asian countries so this detailed account of journalistic experience in the Philippines was welcome and enlightening.
