This book should be read by everybody, and I'm not kidding. I had never heard of Maria Ressa or Rappler, nor knew very much about the politics of the Philippines before I picked this up, and I only picked it up because it happened to catch my eye one day at the library, but it is possibly the most important thing I have read in years.
Throughout this book, Ressa gives the background of her own life, but focuses heavily on the work she and others have done to protect freedom of the press, calls out Facebook's (and other social media's) role in destroying truth online and enabling authoritarianism to succeed all around the world, and gives guidance for everyone from the average citizen to media companies to band together and, well, stand up to a dictator. I have a background in history and political science, am frequently online, and consider myself relatively well informed, but this book taught me countless things. Explained in ways that are easy to understand, Ressa points out how exactly we got to where we are today (the rise of fascism, disinformation, and violence around the globe), and the steps that can be taken to help resist this. Obviously her focus is primarily on the media/fact-checking side of things, but the lessons she imparts in this book can be applied to every facet of your life, regardless of who you are or what you do.
I am begging you to read this book, and I hope you recommend it to everyone in your life. Check it out from your library, and if they don't have it, request it. I firmly believe that the lessons in this book are critical for the future of democracy.

I have a new hero in my life - Maria Ressa. She is truly an inspiration as a person, woman, journalist, Filipina. It’s amazing how much she has achieved, despite what she has encountered in life. The beginning of the book outlines her upbringing and the foundation of how her values came to be. It was reflective and relatable. Then her later life with college, work and she founded Rappler. In terms of what was written about Filipino history and social media, it covered a lot of things that I already knew. The research and analytics shown about social media being used as a weapon against current-day democracies was horrifying. It was something I had already seen online and perhaps not thought much of it, but reflecting back on how times have changed, the rise of social media and fascism - is truly terrifying and very sad. I’m not someone who cries a lot, but towards the end of the book I cried three times. Reading about her friend Twink, and twice during her Nobel Prize speech.
This was such an inspiring book, and I will forever carry Maria Ressa’s values and anecdotes in my life.

I can barely express how important and inspiring this book is. This woman of courage and conviction is to be greatly admired. Highly recommended, especially in these troubled times. For anyone looking at present events and feeling despair, this makes you understand you are not alone. There is much every person can do.

This book is incredible. Maria Ressa writes in such an engaging way where you feel brought into the story. She has had a fascinating life, and so thoughtfully and eloquently reflects on all that she has seen and expierenced. While she provides lots of facts and information about how we've ended up in the current landscape where dictators are primed in every country, she also gives so much hope. This is a book about how we it takes all of us, together. We need to #HoldTheLine.

"And the more horrific things have become, the more we turn to love. That sustains us against overwhelming odds."
This was such a compelling and important read as someone who lives in the US. It is current and relatable to our society today and opened my eyes to so much that I was originially only vaguely aware of. At times, it left me feeling frustrated and furious but also inspired and hopeful for the future. I highly recommend this read!
