Holy Week read no. 2
Another spot in best reads of 2023 secured.
I hope I can draft a decent review for this book before my scheduled bookstagram post because this deserves all the words.
So many topics were touched revolving the current social climate in Philippines and how hands that were not seen in the big picture were controlling the flow and narrative of our fast-changing lives.
I really hope more people will read this book!

This book will stick with me for a long time. I’m amazed by Maria Ressa’s commitment to her work and to bringing truth to light. It’s frightening to read just how much social media has impacted the spread of information (mostly for the worst). I highly recommend this especially during election season!

Not what I expected my first read of the year to be but was definitely needed. If you've also been feeling angry/alone this was a much needed reminder not to fight hate with hate or as the author says "Don't become a monster to fight a monster."

Maria Ressa details how teamwork helped her develop an honest information structure of journalism during a very difficult time in the life of the Philippines. She shows how complicit Facebook was in the establishment of an autocratic regime in the Philippines. Highly recommended.
4.5 for the typo I found right at the end.
Feeling torn between 1. wanting to delete all my social media and throwing away my phone and 2. switching careers to be an investigative journalist. Leaning towards the first one though

This should be required reading for anyone on the internet.
The fact that I’m anxious about publicly stating my thoughts on the book proves Ressa’s point. (And she would be disappointed in me.)
The hard data sailed over my head, even when she included graphs.
Social media is evil.
