I haven't been this bored by a book in quite a long time. It felt like the author was writing whatever went through his head with no regard as to whether it was useful (or interesting). If you're interested in the (very) detailed history of St Lucia (down to Josephine Bonaparte's favourite bathing spot when she lived there), in the growth of bananas and in the reason only certain horse species' tails are used to create violin bows, this book is for you. If not, avoid it.

The characters are unidimensional and keep explaining things we could have got on our own. The whole ending was anticlimactic, and the whole social aspect was overused to the point of ridiculousness.
