This American Girl series is about a Native American girl named Kaya.

This book was not as successful for me as other American Girl books. I love that they branched into a wider variety of cultures, but I think the brevity of the book made it too difficult to describe the culture smoothly. Instead, it was pared down to episodes showing distinctions and research, without enough connection.

I am reading along with the American Girl’s Podcast and was really excited to get to Kaya. I did have her doll when I was growing up. I feel that this book smashes so much into 70 pages that it doesn’t successfully introduce much. We brush past a lot of Nez Perce culture without really explaining or understanding what is happening. I do enjoy headstrong Kaya’s character and will look forward to learning more about her journey and hopefully her culture.

I never know if I should put kids books in her, but I read it! So it counts

My daughter and I have been listening to this series on audible for her bedtime. She loved these stories, and to be honest I did to. They were well written and taught great lessons.

I had a Kaya American Girl doll when I was a kid and decided to revisit the books. This was actually a lot more respectful towards the Nimiipuu people than I expected it to be since it was written in 2002. Very sweet story and definitely a good one for little girls to read.
