Really liked the first part of this book but didn’t care of the second half.

The beginning was great. But then it slowed down when she got to Haxahaven. Only for it to be interesting again from the market until a certain ritual was done. From that point on, it was kind of a big nope for me. That's right. All of Act 3 was basically not great in my eyes. It was alright.

The author used a bad reasoning for why the ritual was different between the 2 characters. Bad as in untrue. Bad as in it absolutely didn't make it easier to accept when the witches do it. The two big AHH scenes with magic did not agree with the in-book reasoning. (The real reasoning why everything's different was a difference in intent, I'm sure.) And her control was only sort of gone? Or completely gone? Which was it? Why couldn't the teachers come out? They couldn't possibly be weaker than teenagers... So yeah that ending was a mess.

And I'm just going to throw this out there, but neither Finn nor Oliver are good for Frances.

I didn’t think I was going to enjoy the book, but I did. I ended up listening to the audiobook instead of finishing the physical copy and that kept me on edge throughout the entire story and wanting to listen for more. If I could show you the way my jaw was dropping at any moment in the book, I would. I see that the second book has Frances going France and hearing that one last letter from Finn, I’m scared and excited for more in the Witch Hunt.

Witches and secret societies. Death and Betrayal. Such a great story. Loved the suspense and drama of two worlds coming together and seeing how the author unfolds the story. A small bit of romance which always is a plus for me.

this book is the perfect vibe of spooky season without being outright halloween-y! it took me a minute to really get in to the story but once things started to move, they moved quickly. I thought I had this book figured out and it continued to surprise me! the ending was gripping and left me wanting to pick up the next book immediately.
can’t recommend this enough as a quick fall read!

I liked the book but I put it down midway through and wasn't interested enough to finish it. Besides, it had to go back to the library anyway

Thank you NetGalley and Simon and Schuster for an advanced readers copy of this book

The Witch Haven by Sasha Peyton Smith is a YA historical urban fantasy. While I found the beginning slightly slow, once all of the world building foundations had been built the story took off and was extremely well paced. Through out the whole story the writing was fantastic.

The way queer witches were included in the story was incredible, with the casual mention of non binary people with magic and wlw characters (most notably there is a side character who is lesbian). All mention of queer people was natural to the world and not out of place in anyway.

As soon as I finished this book I desperately wanted the second one. Smiths storytelling is incredible and I look forward to reading future works of hers.
