Read this with my class. Has a great message that family doesn’t have to look like us and the heart lives who it wants.

A.) The entire story stems from a play on words, which is great.

B.) This book is adorable--writing and pictures both.

C.) I love everything about it.

I adore this book. Really everything about this book. I am a firm believer in that no two families look the same. None at all. I'm also a firm believer in adoption.

This book is probably meant to be funny. And it is. I mean, the King and Queen want a "kids" and they get one.....it's just a goat. But then family takes on a whole new meaning. I will be adding this one to my personal collection.

When a king and queen wish to start a family, they are surprised when their fairy godmother brings them a kid - a baby goat! But they will discover that even if it's not the family they pictured, their little family is perfect after all. This is a super cute picture book that I'd hand to fans of fractured fairy tales or readers looking for royal stories off the beaten path.

This was ridiculous and just the sweetest story!! Also, where's my fairy godmother? I want this adorable goat....although I don't think I can afford the damages...

A King and Queen want to start a family and tell their Fairy Godmother that “any kid will do.” And so they find a baby goat on their doorstep, a somewhat troublesome find, but what are they to do with such a vulnerable creature?

The goat is an unexpected ingredient in this fairytale story, but as the Queen’s own story time reading (The Frog Prince) would remind us that appearances can be deceiving. Is the baby goat a prince in disguise? Could he be a prince regardless of the part where he is a goat? He already as a goatee like the King…

Once Upon a Goat is a cute story about finding joy in a suddenly disruptive household that maybe the adults will appreciate even more than a child listener. Most of the texture is in the telling, the illustrations coming across as a bit wooden. The illustrations are cute enough, the changes the presence of a kid is left on all the neatly drawn backdrops and a gentle color palette.

Once Upon a Goat is a nice read-aloud option and a good reminder of what a joy a kid (any kid at all) can bring to a household.
