It's sad to think that only ten years ago the Romanov family were pardoned and formally classed as "victims of political repressions".

Those four girls lived such quiet, unassuming lives in extraordinary situations. They didn't really seem to enjoy that many glamourous parties or balls. However, they seemed content to stay with each other and the few close friends they had until the end of their short lives. I was and am still interested in learning more about their lives and the history surrounding them and this book really delves deep in finding out all about these girls and the times they lived in.

I still find the photograph on the cover so haunting, even after finishing the book. They were all such beautiful girls and after reading the book, they were so much more. They were so very clever and funny and witty all in their own ways. Such a tragic end.

It was well written, engaging, and easy to follow, but not very much seemed to happen

Disclaimer: This book was given to me in a Goodreads FirstReads giveaway.

A meticulous and entertaining account of not just the Romanova sisters, but their father, mother, and brother as well. This book was well-researched and entertaining, making for the greatest personal historical account I've ever read.

The book is thorough, and yet always stays interesting because of the personal, human perspective of this book. The author draws extensively on previously private diaries, letters, and witness accounts to create the most accurate account of the private Romanov family life. The pages are littered with footnotes and citations, and the author juxtaposes public and private sources in order to give the reader the most cohesive, complete account. Because of the intimate nature of 'The Romanov Sisters', the book is imbued with a sense of deep melancholy that only increases as you race through the pages. I would also highly recommend this book to anyone just beginning their interest in history. This book is easily accessible because of the lack of focus on politics, and the interest in the daily life and human emotions of the Romanov family.

I'm excited to check out more of Rappaport's books, and eager to explore the deeper side of the politics occurring during these events.

this was not what I was expecting. I read the first few chapters thoroughly, but after a while I started skimming more and more. It was just too detailed. Perhaps I was just not interested in the subject matter enough. A good book, however, would have taken my mild interest and enthralled me. Nope, no chance. I could not even bring myself to read the ending page for page.

An incredibly informative and interesting history book that has places of author bias here and there, but it nonetheless a fascinating look at the Romanovs. I do think the author could’ve split up some of her ginormous paragraphs into smaller sections for easier reading.
