Erudite and thoroughly researched. Non-fiction that reads like non-fiction. Haven't seen much written about the individual princesses - they're always presented as a group. Recommend to history buffs and Russophiles.

I found this book fascinating in the history of the Romanov family and Russia. It was a little difficult to follow some of the people at times do to the similar sounding and appearance of Russian names.
I feel, like many other readers, that the title of the book is very different than the content. I do understand that the context of the lives of the four sisters is important, but there was too much context and not enough about who the sisters were.
One glaring omission was of Maria, who is given paragraphs, but never the pages her sisters receive. If this is a group biography, each member of the group should have equal space. Personally, I was looking forward to a different book I read. Maybe sections on each sister until the revolution starts, or something to give each Romanov princess their due. Thus, I was disappointed. However, the writing was wonderful and the persecutive of the princess is a good choice , given how much has been written on Alexandra, Nicholas, and Alexey.

Sometimes you just have to go on a two day Romanov bender and this is perfect for that. ;)
Well-researched story of the Romanov Sisters though a large part of the book deals with their Mother and there were parts I found boring and just skimmed. I appreciated the insights into some of the reasons why England did not offer them refuge, and I learned about the personalities of the older two sisters, especially. Some of Anatasia's personality comes through, but there isn't much about Maria. perhaps because there just aren't many sources of information to give more details on her. It's so sad ... wrong people for the job, but not bad people, and the girls' lives were so isolated in large part due to their Mother.
