My only real criticism of this book is that I found the timeline and dates to be very confusing.
an engaging book that gives a very detailed view into the lives of the last tzar and his family ... building up the causes that led to their murders at a steady pace while not influencing the minds of the readers. its a heavy book but worth reading at least once.
Sheesh, what a tome. Extremely well researched and compellingly written, any undertaking of this kind is going to be heavy, simply by virtue of the subject matter. Rappaport masterfully brought the Romanovs to life and I am even more interested in reading her previous books on the subject. Definitely need to read something a little light first, though.

I thought The Romanov Sisters would present the calamitous story of the lasts tsar from a different angle, the four Grand Duchesses’ experience. It did, but there was not much that I had not read before. They were so young when they died and led such a cloistered life that maybe it is impossible to get a real sense of them as people. The Romanov Sisters did not change that for me. The four young women seem doomed to be shadows, lost in time, defined by the tragedy of their death.

Such a well written book! Though non fiction it reads so easily like fiction. Even though I knew their fate I cried when it ultimately happened as a result of her great writing and feeling as if I knew the family so well.
This was incredibly written! It did not read like a nonfiction, but more like a story being told. A very sad and fascinating story told so well with so many quotes from the family's letters and diaries.
The title is a little misleading. While this book does go into the letters and lives of the Romanov daughters, you get a pretty comprehensive look at the entire family. Starting with Alexandra's upbringing and courtship with Nicholas, until the last days at Tobolsk, you are giving a sweeping view of the family's lives. This book is an excellent starting point for anyone interested in the family. What their ambitions were, how they lived day to day, what they thought of the things happening in the country. However, there isn't a lot of discussion on the politics and economics that caused the revolution and upheaval of the government. There is mention of major conflicts, but no look at the motivations that caused the situation in the first place. Nicholas is at foremost looked at how he was as a father and then a tsar. I would like to read another book that look more closely at Nicholas and his government.
