I feel overwhelming sadness on the loss of lives surrounding the Fall of Romanovs. What do I expect? We know how the story ends.

Excellent book. Rappaport tells a story in a very readable and extremely well documented way. I've been reading about the later Romanov's for decades but never read this much about the four grand duchesses. Telling the family story through their eyes was interesting a unique. It was interesting to review the entire Romanov story as it unfolded only as a family drama rather than a political one.

With age comes a different perspective. When I was 25 I thought this saga was the most tragic thing in the history of the world. Today, it is hard to think that the story could have unfolded or ended in any other way. The parents (Nicholas and Alexandra) foolish inability to read their times and their blind and fatalistic "faith" could lead no where else.

Still sad, but interesting to return to a much loved story.

So good and so sad, this book paints these princesses in a positive light. They seemed very sweet. They were trained as nurses with their mother and treated soldiers. They were otherwise isolated from the world until they were terrorized and executed by the Bolsheviks.

DID NOT FINISH

interesting and well-researched but a little dry and I have other things to read so this kept getting relegated to the bottom of the pile until eventually I couldn’t renew it from the library any more

This book is what I've been looking for! I know the history of the Romanov family and the Russian Revolution. I've been looking for more about their daily lives. And this book provided just that. While it mostly focused on the daughters, there was certainly enough information in here about Nicholas and Alexandra and Alexi to really get a feel of how they were behind the scenes. Great read for Romanov fans!
